Elk Grove -- Lent Ranch mall draws mix of letters - Sacramento Bee
sacbee.com -- Elk Grove -- Lent Ranch mall draws mix of letters: "One thing about the proposal to build Lent Ranch Marketplace on 300 acres at Highway 99 and Grant Line Road: People sure are passionate about it - no matter which side of the issue they fall on.
A few weeks ago, an appeals court overturned another court's ruling that had put the future of the mall in doubt. Now that the mall is again on track, we wanted to know what you thought.
We received nearly 100 letters. A majority were in favor of building it. Though nearly everyone expressed concern about traffic, the convenience of shopping nearby coupled with increased sales-tax revenue for the city seemed to outweigh the growing number of cars, trucks and SUVs on the road.
Here's a sampling of the opinion we received:
Now that the Lent Ranch Mall has been approved, let's look at the good stuff and the bad stuff that it will bring:
* Traffic, traffic and more traffic - just what we need.
* A great place to shop.
* Ecologically poor, because of the proximity to the Cosumnes River.
* More revenue for the city of Elk Grove and the Elk Grove Community Services District.
* The worst possible location due to the proximity of the industrial plants. All it would take is an 'over-pressure' at the propane plant, as remote as it is, and that's all she wrote."
Sacramento Bee sacbee.com -- Sports -- He stands alone - DeMarcus Nelson
sacbee.com -- Sports -- He stands alone: "DeMarcus Nelson is dominating high school basketball in the Sacramento Valley like no one since Bill Cartwright and Kevin Johnson"
Sheldon High School's first basketball game this season didn't count. It was just an exhibition against Del Campo and a fund-raiser for the Sac-Joaquin Section.
But the packed gym in early December - with the likes of Cleveland Indians pitcher C.C. Sabathia and Kings guard Bobby Jackson among the excited onlookers - signaled something bigger was happening.
Everyone was there to watch DeMarcus Nelson, Sacramento's most highly touted high school basketball player in a generation - an All-American with a game to match his hype.
