Basketball Kirchofer enjoys low-key role at Stanford KnoxNews: Basketball: "Joe Kirchofer could have thrust his wide shoulders and muscular 6-foot-9, 250-pound frame into the starting lineup at an Ivy League or Big West program instead of spending most of his four seasons taking up space on the Stanford bench.
But not every basketball player is defined by his stats or his NBA prospects. Success is a deeply personal concept. And Kirchofer, out of Laguna Creek (Calif.) High School, is smart enough to realize who he is and where is - and that he has a pretty good gig going here.
As an increasingly important role player on the No. 3-ranked Cardinal squad, he plays significant minutes at backup center while also getting to play Joe Kirchofer, which can mean anything from aspiring blues artist to museum curator to urban planner. Depends on the day and on the mood. One night he would invite Neil Young for dinner, the next night Frank Sinatra. Another evening it might be Kevin Johnson or Vlade Divac.

This is the world of Elk Grove Unified -- the fastest-growing school district in California and the third-fastest in the country.
California's population is growing by more than 500,000 people a year, many of them migrating to places like Elk Grove, where newer, cheaper homes are being built -- usually places at the edges of metropolitan centers.
Once a sleepy farm town south of Sacramento, Elk Grove became the county's second-largest city in December.
Last year, new homes in the area added nearly 3,200 students to the district -- enough pupils to fill four elementary schools. It was largest single-year increase since the district was created in 1959.
Accompanying the district's growth is an increasingly diverse student body.
Eighty languages are spoken in Elk Grove classrooms, including Spanish, Vietnamese, Hmong, Cantonese and Russian. Twenty-one percent of the district's students are English language learners. Overall, 34 percent of the pupils are white, 19 percent African American, 19 percent Asian American and 20 percent Latino.
